Austin went from a mid-size college town to a major tech hub in about 15 years, and the transformation is still happening. Tesla moved its headquarters here. Samsung is building a $17 billion chip plant in the area. Oracle, Google, Meta, and Apple all have significant Austin campuses. The University of Texas is a constant source of talent and research funding. State government employment adds another stable layer to the job market. The downside is that Austin's cost of living has spiked - longtime residents will tell you it used to be cheap, and they're right. But no state income tax and strong salary growth have kept the economics workable for most tech and professional workers. The music and food scenes don't hurt the quality of life either.
