Job Description

Under close supervision, responsible for performing daily maintenance and fueling of Highway Department equipment, maintaining accurate service and fuel logs, and ensuring all documentation is filed properly. Also maintains the fuel truck for 24‑hour readiness and assists with fueling other government agency equipment as needed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, physical requirements, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. Performs daily routine maintenance on all equipment used by the Highway Department throughout the county. This includes fueling, cleaning radiators, and cleaning outer air filters. Keeps a detailed log of fuel added to each piece of equipment, including the fuel truck, and a checklist of completed tasks and materials used. Serves and maintains documentation of service on all heavy equipment, with service at predetermined intervals, and presents documentation to the PLM III office daily for filing and audit purposes. Sometimes tasked with fueling other government agency equipment, generators, vehicles, and ensuring it is charged to the proper department and turned in to PLM III office for billing. Also maintains the fuel truck itself, keeping it stocked, full of fuel, clean, and ready for 24‑hour use during weather or disaster events. May be required to work late or be called in during such events. Performs other related duties/tasks as assigned. Knowledge of repair and service manuals, diagnostic equipment, and tools for vehicle and equipment maintenance. Knowledge of Hamilton County work order system, county policies and procedures. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Employee shall furnish all hand tools needed to perform the duties of an Equipment Mechanic; Hamilton County will provide specialty tools. This position is deemed essential during inclement weather situations and must report to or remain at work, even when administrative closings are announced, as determined by the Department Head. Prior to operating a county‑owned vehicle, all employees must complete the HC Defensive Driving course and/or the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) provided at the department level. Equivalent of a high school diploma plus a minimum of at least three (3) years of direct work experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance. A valid Class B CDL with a valid HAZMAT and Tanker endorsement is required at the time of hire. SAFETY SENSITIVE This position has been identified as “safety sensitive” under 49 CFR Part 40‑Department of Transportation Workplace Drug and Alcohol Policy. It will be subject to drug and alcohol testing for the following: post‑offer pre‑employment, when there is reasonable cause, after an on‑the‑job accident or contributing to an accident, on a random basis, prior to return to duty after suspension, and as follow‑up. This also follows the Rules and Regulations of the Employee Handbook. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The work requires moderate physical effort involving intermittent walking, standing, sitting, and driving. Frequent standing, talking, hearing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Must frequently lift or move up to 10 lb and occasionally up to 100 lb. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception. Works outdoors in hot, cold, dry, wet, dusty, muddy, windy, humid conditions. Frequently near moving equipment, mechanical parts, vibrations, jostling, bouncing. May work on high, precarious places and be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, flammable liquids. Noise level usually loud.
