Job Type: Part-time

Location Requirements: Remote withink DC or Boston areas

Work Environment & Culture

  • The organization holds itself to three principles in everything it produces: accuracy, transparency and impact. This role makes sure its finances meet that same standard for the board, funders and auditors.

Job Description: Our client is seeking a fractional CFO to provide strategic financial leadership, board-level reporting and oversight of the accounting function. You will serve as the organization's officer-level finance lead, reporting to and working directly with the Executive Director, supported by a part-time bookkeeper who handles day-to-day transactions, and working closely with the Director of Operations. Its work is funded by foundation and corporate grants, event sponsorships and individual giving, with multiple restricted, project-based awards running at once.

Responsibilities

Monthly (about 5 hours)

  • Review the bookkeeper's month-end close and reconciliations, and sign off on the books.
  • Produce the monthly reporting package: budget vs. actuals by category and project, cash position and cash-flow outlook.
  • Review grant and project budgets for accuracy against restricted funding terms.
  • Meet with the Executive Director on spend, cash and emerging risks.

Peak season (up to 10 hours per month)

  • Annual budget: build the coming year's budget and multi-year outlook, including scenario planning for funding changes.
  • Board reporting: prepare the quarterly financial update for the board book and present to the board and finance committee as needed.
  • Audit: serve as lead contact for the independent auditor and coordinate schedules and responses.
  • Tax and compliance: oversee Form 990 / 990-PF preparation with outside accountants and support retirement plan filings (Form 5500).

Ongoing oversight

  • Set financial policies, internal controls and approval workflows.
  • Advise on cash and reserve management, including money market accounts.
  • Support funder budgets, financial reports and due-diligence requests.
  • Guide improvements to financial systems so project spend flows into budgets automatically.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in finance leadership, including CFO, controller or fractional CFO roles.
  • Nonprofit finance expertise: fund accounting, restricted grants, Form 990 and single-entity audits.
  • A track record of preparing board-ready financials and presenting them clearly to non-finance audiences.
  • Experience leading independent audits from planning through final statements.
  • Strength in budgeting, forecasting and scenario planning for grant-dependent organizations.
  • Comfort overseeing a part-time bookkeeper and modernizing small-team finance systems.
  • CPA or MBA in finance preferred.
